A Day Trip to Rock of Cashel

The Rock of Cashel is a lovely day trip for visitors to Clare. It is the most visited heritage site in Ireland and enjoyed a recent visit from Queen Elizabeth II. An imposing sight, it was the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster for several hundred years and is also said to be the site of the conversion of Aenghus, the King of Munster by St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. The Rock of Cashel is one of most impressive collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture in Europe.

Reputedly the site of the conversion of Aenghus the King of Munster by St. Patrick dating back to the 5th century AD. Before the Norman invasion The Rock of Cashel was famously known as the seat of the High Kings of Munster, although there is little structural evidence of their time here. Most of the buildings date from the 12th and 13th centuries when the rock was gifted to the Church. The buildings in the Rock of Cashel represent both Hiberno-Romanseque and Germanic influences in their architecture.
